What are pimple patches?
They're everywhere. Sold in many different stores and considered a must for many people. Pimple patches. They're a new product, relatively speaking. However, do they live up to all they promise?
First, let's dive into what a pimple patch actually is. Pimples form when there is dead skin and oil that clogs a pore, which causes swelling. A typical pimple patch is made from hydrocolloid, a polymer that absorbs liquid due to the presence of a hydroxyl group. The patch absorbs oil and provides a physical layer of protection from the actual pimple.
There are also pimple patches that contain active healing ingredients such as salicylic acid which helps clear pores, and others such as niacinamide and tea tree oil. However, depending on the skin sensitivity there is a risk that these additional ingredients could irritate the skin.
Aside from topical pimples, there are also pimples that lie beneath the surface of the skin that can become inflamed and painful. Typical hydrocolloid pimple patches will not be extremely effective for these specific ones. Micro needle pimple patches are more effective for these cases as they can actually penetrate the skin and get to the wound.
What do the studies say?
There was a study done on pimple patches made of traditional hydrocolloid material. The study was conducted with 12 participants who each had pimples capable of being popped. The patches were used and compared to control groups that did not use patches. It was seen from the studies that pimple patches do work, and visibility reduces signs of acne.
It is regarded and seen in the studies that pimple patches do reduce pimples, and are effective. However, it is important to note that the hydrocolloid material is specifically useful for pimples where they can be popped. Inflamed pimples that are not capable of being popped cannot benefit from traditional hydrocolloid pimple patches, and need microneedle patches instead. This is so that the microneedles can get into the wound and deliver the ingredients to promote healing.
Wrap Up:
With so many different pimple patches on the market, it is difficult to determine which ones are the best and most effective. Thankfully, there are a variety of opinions that include microneedling patches, topical ones, and ones with active healing and drying ingredients. It seems from the study discussed above that pimple patches are a useful tool that can reduce the appearance of pimples. However, they are also an extra step and thing to purchase, so it depends what one is specifically looking for. All in all, it seems that pimple patches work and can promote a healing environment for the wound!
